SUSTAIN - Satellite Utilization for Smart Tools in Agriculture and Innovative Networking - was built during NASA Space Apps Hackathon 2024, where the challenge was to create something meaningful using NASA’s open data resources. The idea we landed on was a tool for farmers - something that could take raw soil moisture and water data and turn it into genuinely useful guidance for managing irrigation and improving crop yields.

The core of the app is map-based. A farmer opens it, sees their location, and can pull up soil data for the surrounding area. From there the app surfaces insights about water usage - whether the soil is retaining too much, too little, and what adjustments might help. The goal was to close the gap between satellite data that NASA makes available and the people who could actually benefit from it on the ground.

We built the frontend in React and TypeScript, leaning into a clean map-centric interface with a blue and white palette that keeps geographic data readable without visual noise. Fitting a meaningful product into a weekend hackathon window meant making deliberate choices about what to build and what to leave out. The team finished in the Top 15 out of 100+ competing teams, which felt like a strong result given the constraints.
